Unknown Individual(s) Impersonating Gibson Capital and Its Employees On WhatsApp For Fraudulent Purposes
PITTSBURGH, PA (February 3, 2025) – Recently, Gibson Capital, LLC (“Gibson”) learned that unknown individuals are utilizing the names of Gibson and its employees to defraud unsuspecting users of the mobile application WhatsApp™. Specifically, Gibson has learned that several WhatsApp™ Groups have been created using Gibson’s name in furtherance of fraudulent activity wherein members of the Group are told they are “VIP” investors, asked to invest in stocks, and then lose their investment when the scammers sell out of the position. These groups are not Gibson. Nor is any Gibson representative a member of any of those groups.
To be clear, Gibson does not use WhatsApp™ to market its services, solicit clients, or provide investment advice. Similarly, Gibson employees do not use WhatsApp™ to market Gibson’s services, solicit clients, or provide investment advice. Rather, Gibson only works with and provides investment advice to clients who have undergone the proper onboarding and were provided with Gibson’s Form ADV, Parts 2A, 2B, and Form CRS.
Gibson has alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has contacted WhatsApp™ in an attempt to remove the offending groups from the application for violation of its Terms of Service and Fraud Policy. To learn more about these types of scams, visit the Securities and Exchange Commission website HERE.
