It may not come as a surprise to you that we regularly hear from clients who are looking for resources to protect themselves against identity theft or to resolve a potential breach. The Federal Trade Commission reports that more than one million identity theft reports are filed annually. In fact, a new identity theft occurs roughly every 22-30 seconds in the U.S, and in 2024, cybercriminals stole approximately $43 billion from U.S. consumers.
While everyone is at risk, adults aged 30-39 are targeted most frequently, but victims over 70 face the highest financial losses. These statistics paint a stark picture of just how widespread online fraud has become.
And while we certainly are not experts in the field of cybersecurity, we take our role as a fiduciary for our clients seriously. To that end, we have created two documents to outline some of the best practices for protecting your portfolio. The Gibson Capital Cybersecurity Series and printer-friendly Cybersecurity Checklist cover a lot of ground, from basics to more sophisticated strategies to secure your assets. We have intentionally designed them in four separate sections, which you can prioritize based on your time, needs, and comfort level with the content. This issue includes tips for educating yourself about cyberthreats, protecting your investment accounts, securing your devices, and steps to take if you think you’ve been hacked. Please download them at your leisure or save them for future reference using the links below.
If you have any questions or need any additional information about these topics, please don’t hesitate to call our office and ask to speak with me or our Chief Compliance Officer, Daniel Berczik. We are ready to help when you need it.
